Alan Meredith’s functional sculptures begin life as green irish wood. Meredith leverages this flexibility and responsiveness as he begins the process of steam-bending that results in a finished product that retains the memory and character of the tree it used to be. He reacts to the wood in real time, negotiating between material and manner to create a piece with unique presence. The “Altered” series is then sandblasted with high-pressure recycled glass to enhance the natural grain and structure of the tree, and subjected to a fuming process that reacts with tannins to develop warm, deep color within the very wood itself. 

Due to the handmade nature of these objects and the inherent unpredictability of wood, each is one-of-a-kind, and imperfections should be expected and celebrated.
