"The work we do is a constant dialogue between the past and the present. It draws on Maine’s rich Wabanaki and Shaker legacies, but I filter those histories through a contemporary lens."

- Erin Pollard

Underwater Weaving creates hand-woven baskets using techniques learned by the founder, artist Erin Pollard, while she was growing up in Maine’s artisan craft community. Each functional sculpture is formed by hand, rhythmically and methodically, resulting in a blend of artistic exploration and practical utility designed to be both used and contemplated.

Pollard works exclusively with natural, organic plant fibers, celebrating the spontaneity and unexpected character revealed in each finished piece. She explores the tension between progress and preservation, reviving the tactile craft traditions of her youth for a modern world and the digital age, and thereby revealing the inherent power of softness, slowness, and beauty.
